SNP MSP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Alasdair Allan, has welcomed confirmation from HHP and CNES that 12 social housing units will now be built in Leverburgh in one phase.
This follows strong pushback from the community after people learned that only six homes were going to be built initially, despite the land being available and the demand for housing within the community being overwhelming.
The islands’ MSP was amongst those who took part in the public meeting held in Leverburgh on Thursday 27th July, where over 80 local residents were present to show the level of community support for all 12 homes being built as soon as possible. Representatives from HHP, CNES and TIG were in attendance to engage with the local community.
Commenting on yesterday’s news, Allan said:
“I am very pleased that stakeholders have listened to the local community in South Harris, and have now revised their previous decision on the approach to this housing project. Given the demand for housing in this area, I am sure these new homes will be filled quickly and will help support the sustainability of the community.
“South Harris Community Council have been instrumental in pushing for these homes to be built in one phase, as opposed to the two-phase approach originally favoured by HHP. It is vital for the health and development of any community that a range of housing options are available, and I hope that similar projects will continue to be completed across our island communities in the coming years.”
