Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP Alasdair Allan today attended an event in Stornoway aimed at raising awareness about technological advancements for supporting people living with dementia and their families.
The road show event was organised by NHS Western Isles RemoAge and Alzheimer Scotland Western Isles. Alzheimer Scotland’s Technology Team were represented by Gillian Anderson, Senior Technology co-ordinator who showcased the work they have designed and are delivering through a new national learning programme for all practitioners, delivery partners and front line staff who support people living with dementia and their families and carers.
The learning is intended to raise awareness of developments in technology and to support the acquiring of new skills and knowledge so fits in well with the work done locally by NHS Western Isles RemoAge project.

“This was a really useful opportunity to hear more about the ways new technologies can help people with dementia, as well and their families and carers.
“I was particularly interested to hear about Purple Alert – a free community minded app that helps people living with dementia to maintain their independence for as long as possible while helping their neighbours to look out for them.
“There was also a range of other technologies being promoted, such as GPS, adaptive aids for people’s homes and things are simple as clocks that will tell people whether it’s four in the morning or four in the afternoon.
“In Scotland, someone is diagnosed with dementia every 30 minutes and it is clearly one of the biggest health and social care challenges faced by society today. The NHS Western Isles Assisted Technology Centre is based at Grianan and open Tuesday-Thursday 10-3pm as a drop in session.
